Film Shot on 7D Wins Best Film at SXSW Film Festival

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

“Tiny Furniture” was shot on the Canon 7D and has just won the juried Best Film award at the SXSW film festival. The trailer for the film is below.

These are interesting times with the Oscar for best picture going to a movie shot on the S16mm format (The Hurt Locker) and a film shot on the Canon 7D winning best film at SXSW. You definitely don’t need to be shooting on 35mm film to be a contender these days.

Tiny Furniture Trailer from Lena Dunham on Vimeo.

A pre-festival trailer for Tiny Furniture, a feature film by Lena Dunham (premiering in narrative competition at SXSW 2010)

22-year-old Aura returns home after college to her artist mother’s loft with the following: a useless film theory degree, 357 hits on her YouTube page, and no shoulders to cry on. Starring Dunham and her real-life family, Tiny Furniture is tragicomedy about what does and does not happen when you graduate with no skills, no love life, and a lot of free time.

Low light test.

Canon T2i, 550D Low-light Video Tests from a3o Studios on Vimeo.

This is a test of the Canon T2i/550d

Most shots were done with the Canon 50mm f1.8 (non-usm) lens. The extreme close up shots were done with the same lens with a screw-on macro adapter.

Their is also one shot with the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 lens.

It was important to me to do tests without any expensive specialty lenses. I believe both of these lenses are valued under the $100 USD mark.

All of these shots were setup in 5 minutes or less, on special rigs or setup was needed.

Room lighting is 4x65w flood bulbs, recessed.

No lights were used in the lit candle shots.

A 14w CFL desk lamp was used in the candle smoke shots.

Shutter speed was 1/30sec for all shots.

More detailed review at: http://4volt.com/Blog/archive/2010/02/26/canon-t2i550d-practical-video-review.aspx

Note: in the dark areas of some shots you can see some obvious compression squares, this is compounded by some noise and the relatively low bitrate that vimeo uses. For a screenshot of the original video see the URL above.

Snow Flakes from Prashanna Jayaseelan on Vimeo.

Canon 550D/T2i

Lenses used: 50mm f1.4
24mm-70mm f2.8

Shot by: Prashanna Jayaseelan
Evan C. King
Claude Quammie

Indoor was shot at ISO 200/400
Outdoor was shot at ISO 100

Last scene was 1280×720 at 60fps for slow-mo

Disadvantages in comparison to the 7D would be the build and for me the ISO incrementation. I would’ve liked it to have 320, 1000, 1250 etc..

But I didn’t notice any difference in image quality except that the 7D is a tiny bit better in low light – very small difference. I find that the skewing is less on the 550D/T2i also.

Rainy day again in the South of England, picked up my 550D from Park Cameras in Burgess hill. Put the Canon standard L zoom on, popped in a 4GB card (all I had, forgot it doesn’t take CF cards). Battery only half charged in the car, grabbed a standard photo tripod and a umbrella and filmed for 40 mins in the poring rain, WB set on Auto, couldn’t turn it off in the rain. Filmed in 1920×1080 25p and at the end crop mode for a few seconds & kept in native resolution (black bars all around).

All footage filmed at 800 or 1600 ISO. Lens UV guard causing a few internal reflections.

Very light camera and a pleasure to use. I look forward to using tomorrow in the daylight with faster lenses.
